Spotlight on… Louise Tribble: Children’s Author

This week, I caught up with Louise Tribble, a children’s author from Wales. Louise’s books, such as Mindful Millie and Eco Evie, focus on important and relevant issues, such as anxiety, mindfulness and caring for the environment.

Mindful Millie

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I come from a little town in West Wales where I grew up until I went to university in Cardiff. From there I moved to Stockholm in Sweden! I absolutely love spending time with my husband, daughter and two dogs, Harvey and Junior. We like to go to the park or on other adventures. I also love reading, crafting and meeting with friends for coffee.

What did you love reading as a child?

I remember loving one book; I can’t remember the name of it but it was about a teddy that went on an adventure and sent letters home from all over the world. It even had envelopes! As I got older I fell in love with Harry Potter and I read them over and over again!

Why do you think reading is so important?

To me, reading is important because it is a way to keep my imagination fresh, to relax and to be able to focus on something amazing. At the moment I am trying to read different genres so right now I am reading a chic-lit book, next will be a science or factual book, then a young adults, then some sci-fi – I’m trying to broaden my horizons and I’m actually loving it!

What’s your top tip for becoming an author?

Just go for it! I think now is the best time to become an author because you don’t have to spend years on end jumping through hoops and hoping to be published. If you work really hard you can publish yourself. It isn’t easy at all. Especially when it comes to promoting your books but if it is your dream, then you can make it come true.

How did you become a writer?

Being an author was never something I thought I would do. I wrote my book Mindful Millie out of wanting to do something to help children with their mental health. After struggling with anxiety and depression for most of my life, it was only at 22 I found mindfulness, which helped me so much that I thought, if only there was a simple way for children to learn this! And then I had the idea for Mindful Millie. Then came Sad Simon, then Anxious Arthur. Now I have another two books out, Eco Evie and an adults book – Being Mindful of Our Planet which both look at climate change and what we can do – another topic close to my heart.

If you could have any other career, what would you choose and why?

One day I would love to go and complete a PGCE and teach primary school children. That is what I have always wanted to do but my anxiety has made it very difficult. And now I am in Sweden, the language barrier is there!

What is the favourite book you have written and why?

I really can’t decide! They all mean different things to me. Mindful Millie is probably special because it was my first, but I’ve also really enjoyed working with Cat, who illustrated my environmental books! I’m enjoying writing my new one too called ‘Real People’ which I’m having a go at illustrating myself – so let’s see how that goes!

Which book do you wish you had written?

Honestly – if I think of a book, it gets written. I’m quite determined like that!

Louise Tribble’s books are available to purchase on Amazon.
